The
Deep Backward Square Leg Cricket Club were established in 1986 and started off playing friendlies.
In 1987 we joined the Suffolk Cricket Alliance in Section F.
In 2006 we entered the Two Counties Championship for the first time on Saturdays, whilst continuing to play on Sundays in the Suffolk Alliance.
Brief HistoryAlthough it was in the Club's Constitutions never to be promoted!! due to an adjustment of the leagues and despite finishing bottom of Section F at the end of our first league season we achieved promotion to Section E. We continued our struggle in Section E until 1992 when yet another league adjustment saw promotion to the dizzy heights of Section D.
Following a merger in 1998 with another side with whom we have had a long standing relationship with (Guardian Cricket Club), we expanded the club and have run a 2nd team ever since.
Apart from league cricket we also enjoy touring games, both home and abroad (reports and photos of previous tours appear elsewhere on the site).
In 2006 with the local reorganisation of cricket, we entered the Two Counties Championship playing on Saturdays, whilst continuing to play on Sundays in Section B of the Suffolk Alliance.
At the end of the 2007 we gained promotion to Division 8 by a mere 0.01 pts.
As a result in 2008 we played in the Two Counties Championship Div 8, however as a consequence of losing a few regular Sunday players to the Saturday side, we elected to drop our Sunday cricket to the bottom division of the Suffolk Alliance - and therefore giving younger and less experienced cricketers the chance to play competitive cricket.
At the end of the 2008 season, we found ourselves in the “unfortunate” position of being promoted again, this time as a result of the Two Counties league being re-organised. So in 2009 we found ourselves in Division 6 – which might just be a step to far – if we cannot put out our strongest sides most weeks.
INDOOR
After a break of many season's, DBSL first season back in Gainsborough Indoor League resulted in us winning Division 3 of the competition.
The team lost only one game throughout the league season and finished 14pts cler of second place Hadleigh.
Whilst the runs were mainly scored by Mel Phair (248) and Andy Coke (167), the wickets were spread around with Nigel Wallis and Adam Stevens taking 7 a piece and Dave Miller 6 and Andy Cloke 5.
Congratulations to all those who took part.
Full details can be found at: Link to Indoor website including some photos of the trophies.
